Betty, There is a huge volume of mail right now due to the recent release of version 8. As others have said you can temporarily unsubscribe for some period of time or depending on your email program you might be able to set a filter for the legacy user group address to send all email directly to Trash. Then reset or remove that filter when you want to continue getting email from the list.
Personally, I just tick the checkbox next to topics that I don't have any interest in then hit the Trash button and they are gone. This way I can still read the ones that are of interest to me interspersed with the others.
