Mary,

I can't scroll the grid either except with the
scroll bar.  It's not for me a viable alternative
since you can't see all the children at once.

I'm experimenting with using Descendant View
limited to 2 or 3 generations instead of the mouseover information.

Re columns - have you tried Best Fit columns?
Then there are 3 if needed but if not 1 or 2.
Depending on your options you do see more of the information that way.
