Thanks, Dee in Maryland === Other than cost what is the difference between Carbonite, Dropbox and SkyDrive? I am using MS Office 365 which includes SkyDrive. ==== |
After lots of reading and checking programs, I use Goodsync from Siber Systems on Win 7.
I use it to Sync my Legacy data files and the media files to my Google drive folders, and I'm aware it'll do the same for other Cloud services. I just set-up two sync jobs to monitor for changes in my important Legacy folders and each time it works perfectly for me; Yes the first sync of the media folder can take a little while, but once done it's only incremental from then on.
As a bonus, every time my computer gets turned off, Goodsync will run another sync job, and update any changes made on my hard disc to an external USB 3 HD.
The program updates are frequent which indicates to me the popularity of the the software, and of course it does exactly what I want.
Dropbox I generally use to share files between my computer and the smartphone, so I haven't really bothered exploring whether Goodsync will handle Dropbox as well.
Another Legacy backup I use is to export a Gedcom from Legacy 8, and turn on "export all sources" and under the privacy options I choose to export all private material as well, then I upload the created Gedcom to Dropbox. Next I use a program called Family Bee which handles Gedcoms only on Android smartphones; From the phone I download the Gedcom, which then gets imported into Family Bee. A fantastic thing to have if your visiting a local library or archive centre as all your data is right there in front of you. Yes I know there are other programs that will relate more directly with Legacy, but they also have images as well (totally wasted in my opinion on a phone), and as I proved some wouldn't work with my Samsung Galaxy S3.
Others might have better ideas, but I just wanted a couple of complete "backups" in several totally different locations, remote from my computer too if possible.
Cheers
