To me, when I see a blank field, I assume than nothing is/was entered into that field. If Biological is contained in that field, whether by default or not, I would much prefer to see it when I look at the Popup. That way, I can quickly see whether it is ok or needs to be changed. I found this in a few families that were blended. I had made the proper designation in FTM and wanted to verify that it had correctly transferred when I imported the gedcom. I have no intention of designating every child’s relationship. I do, however, feel that the relationship should not be blank when there is a relationship, even when the program enters it as default. Programatically, it is a simple matter to have the box echo what is checked one screen deeper. Were I not verifying an import, it would be far less important to me.

Relationship to Father and Mother blank Don, I think Kurt was saying that you can change the parent-child relationship to say Biological yourself - it is already set as Biological as default, it just appears as a blank. Cases where setting a child to Biological would be needed would be within blended or adoptive families, to help clearly identify which children are step-children of which parent and/or which children are adopted or fostered etc. Leaving the setting blank will do no harm to your files - and changing it for every single person will only waste time *grin* On 31 December 2013 00:39, Don Hanson <[email protected]> wrote: Thanks Kurt, I figured it was me! I’m just getting my feet wet with Legacy and in other programs only set the relationship when there are multiple spouses. When verifying that info imported as expected, I’d rather use as few clicks as possible. You mentioned that the default can be changed to explicitly say biological. I have looked through the Options > Customize and do not find that option. Searching Help doesn’t find it either. Where should I look? Relationship to Father and Mother blank This is normal whether imported from a GEDCOM or just added directly in Legacy. The default relationship to parent is blank meaning biological. You can change it to explicitly say biological, but I normally don’t bother. I normally only set a value for the relationship to father or mother if it is something other than biological (eg adopted, foster, etc). Relationship to Father and Mother blank I imported a gedcom 5.5 from Family Tree Maker 2014. In cleaning up the potential problem of children not sorted, I noticed that when opening the Edit Children popup the relationships for each child was blank. Clicking on the ‘expand arrow’ next to the father or mother relationship would open the Master Child-Parent Relationship List with the correct relationship highlighted and checked. Only by un-checking and re-checking the Tag would the Relationship show on the Edit Children popup. This seems too strange to be normal or expected behavior. Is it?
