Susan,
I don’t know what might be considered the correct way but my personal preference is to use (_________) for an unknown name. I enter everything based on the way it reads in the narrative descendant report and I like to have the reader see immediately where a name is unknown. Sometimes I get unexpected help because their eye is drawn to the ‘hole’ in the report. Whatever you decide to use, if anything, if you’re consistent, you can use a search and replace, should you ever decide on a different style of placeholder. This is the only unknown/ missing information that I identify with a placeholder. I have many where I have the father’s full name and his wife’s first name only.
