When you Check/Repair Family File it says this will remove all the deleted records which is also done by Compact Family File. There are times that the Check/Repair will find issues and I get a message to say ‘run Compact File’ then run ‘Check/Repair’ again. It would seem that the two are doing quite different things. I run both.

So if you run the former, you don't also need the latter. There are three sections of check boxes in the Remove abandoned I have ALL checked in the Keep/Restore Original I have NONE checked. In the Combined Duplicates I have ALL but Surnames checked and also the Ignore Case checked. This has worked well for me in that it removes the unused, doesnt overwrite and customized additions and combines duplicates except for Surnames. (I use Capitalized Surnames for my DIRECT Ancestors and standard first letter capitals for any other persons with that surname.
