This is how I see it, which is different to the other replies I've seen
so far...

In my database, I would use the email that the file is attached to as
the source. After all, that is how it came to you. If there are
several files attached to the email, they would all be captured in this
one source citation; assuming multiple attachments to the email, I would
mention which particular attached file an item of data came from in the
Source Detail.

Any time you're looking at the data extracted (ie recorded in your
Legacy database) and want to go back to the 'original' to check on
something, that email in your mail box is the original for you. You may
have saved the file(s) to your hard drive as well, but many formats
(.doc, .exe, .txt, etc) are editable and you may unwittingly pick up
changes and errors in those saved files along the way. The copy
attached to your email will be unchanged and can be downloaded again if
required.

I don't delete emails, by the way. At Gmail I keep everything ever sent
to me, except spam which gets checked and then deleted regularly - I've
been using this account since about 2005, and the 178,000+ emails stored
at the moment are taking up 61% of the 15GB of storage currently
allocated to me - which has grown over time from the original 1GB or
thereabouts (my memory is getting hazy on the details!). I am in no
danger of running out of space there. Any email in that mail box is
easily located if I need to find it again.

Hope this gives you some food for thought. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy
