The current version of Adobe Acrobat (the full program, not Acrobat Reader) is
version 11. You apparently have an old version 5. Depending upon how the .PDF
was created to allow for backward compatibility will affect whether or not you
can open one of the new .PDF files. For example, if I create a new PDF in
Acrobat 11 and allow for backward compatibility only to version 9, you MAY not
be able to open the file. However, my brain cells are telling me that you
should get a warning or error message about version incompatibility rather than
an error message about a damaged file. I believe that Adobe was smart in that
regard but I really don’t know about Acrobat v5.x. If you were to download and
use any one of the freebie or shareware PDF writer programs, maybe that would
solve your problem.

In Legacy 7. 5, the internal PDF creator will create a PDF file which is an
older Acrobat 3.x version. The engine and code used is under a license
agreement with ComponentOne PDF Generator. So far I have had no difficulty
opening any of the Legacy created PDFs with Acrobat 11 but I suspect that no
special features are being used in the Legacy created PDF which could possibly
cause a version incompatibility. The only problem I’ve seen with the Legacy
created PDFs is the bloated file size. I usually open the Legacy created PDF in
Acrobat 11 and then resave as a reduced file size which typically results in a
reduction of around one-third the original file size.

Oh, in re-reading your message, you might try this. Go back to the folder where
the PDF resides and instead of double clicking on the file or icon which you
have set to automatically open with the Acrobat READER program, try right
clicking on the file and select OPEN WITH… If your Acrobat Writer 5.0 program
does not appear in a list of possible programs that Windows is suggesting, you
may have to browse to the Program Files folder to locate the Acrobat executable.

Subject: [LegacyUG] pdf's

Small problem. I have Adobe Acrobat Writer 5 and Acrobat Reader 10. I only use
the Writer to open documents if I need to do something special with them.

Default for pdf's is set as Adobe Reader (10).

When the pdf's are on my Desktop or anywhere in the computer, including in the
Family Tree Folder where all media are stored, when I open them they
automatically open with Adobe Reader (10).

When I attach them to the person concerned via the Media Gallery and try to
open them from there they open in Adobe Acrobat Writer (5) which opens a
message "There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and
could not be repaired:.

I cannot stop it opening with the Writer (5) if I go back to the Folder itself
it still opens correctly with Reader (10).

I have run a File Maintenance but nothing changed.

Help, suggestions please - I cannot find anything in the Help files so far.

I am using Windows 7 and Legacy De Luxe 8.

Thanks, Marion
