I have folders in my Thunderbird program, too, where I read most of the emails sent to my Gmail account (and I'm composing this reply).
What I described below is talking about Gmail directly on the web, ie at gmail.com or mail.google.com in a browser, not being read via a program where the mail is downloaded to your computer. My apologies for not making myself clearer.
