Dave,

If you only found the miscellaneous search for direct line ancestors
with no parents, then you were looking in the wrong section of the
Miscellaneous tab.

The bottom section gives linked people with no parents.
Obviously completely unlinked individuals don't have parents in the
database.

Searches are often best done in two parts.

If you only want the search for part of the database, first tag the part
of the database you want, as Sherry suggested.

Then you can search for those with that tag and do the miscellaneous
search within that search list.
