Bruce, I had a similar problem. What I did was add a V for verified in Privacy brackets to the name until I was happy I had verified a particular branch and added reliable sources and then removed it. So John [[V]] - I guess I could have gone the other way and had John [[nv]] for not verified.
An alternative is to dedicate a tag number to the task and remove the tag when you are happy. But your idea of using the Ancestral File Number field is quite a good one as it can be displayed on Family View if it hasn't actually been used for the AFN. Also maybe helpful. On the Assigned Sources screen for each person, if you are showing all events, you'll find source fields for relationship to father and relationship to mother. You may find them helpful. In the Search, you can search for people with missing sources - a variety of alternatives on which fields to look at. This may help you identify the people who need more work and once identified the search list can be tagged.
