Barton, The update is not automatic. When you see that an update has been released you can download it and install it from within Legacy itself if you are using the Deluxe version. You do this on the Legacy Home tab. Or, you can update from our website using this link http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/DownloadUpdate.asp
