On top of everything that's already been said in this thread, this is what I would do in this situation...
If you're uncertain about the father, I would add a new unlinked individual who isn't attached to anyone (Ctrl-N) to start with, and then link that person to the mother only. For the name, I would put something in privacy brackets [[like this]] to show how much I know about the child - it might be [[4th Daughter]] or [[Child 2]] or simply [[Unknown]], depending on what the record you're looking at told you. If your source does not indicate the child's surname (as this would appear in the post below), don't include one at this stage. The source information stays with this placeholder name so you know later on where you got the information from. Later on when you find out more, I would keep that placeholder name as it's part of my research progress. Add a new AKA when you know their name, and swap it with the current main (placeholder) name. When you discover the father of each child, he can be added (if necessary) and linked to the child and mother. Yes, this naming method might look a bit funny in reports - this does not bother me. I generally suppress all private information when I run a report to share with another person, and that includes names in privacy brackets. Hope this helps. :-) Wendy GeoPappas wrote on 25/02/2015 10:46: > I have a 1910 U.S. Federal Census that states that a mother had born > 10 children, but only 7 were alive at that time.
