I’m not quite sure of some of the terminology that Leon used but I believe what
he is saying is correct. What is missing is the fact that any picture added to
a Vital Event (Birth, Death, Marriage) in Legacy is normally never included in
any report generated by Legacy. So anytime you add a picture to that little
PLUS sign on the Individual Information window, those pictures are in a virtual
black hole….never to be seen again in any report and visible only to those
running the Legacy program on your computer.

If you carefully read the parameters of what can be included on the various
reports you will find there are only 3 types of pictures that can be included:
(1) an individual picture of the person; (2) an event detail picture; and (3)
an event master source picture. What is lacking is the ability to print
pictures attached about the birth, the death, or any other vital event.

If the original poster of the question were to add his family group picture by
clicking on the “Marriage Media Files” icon in the marriage field for the
husband and wife, it brings up the same add media window as the large plus sign
for the other vital events. The problem is that the picture would then never be
printed in a report. There is one exception and that occurs when using the
Publishing Center, and adding a Picture Scrapbook in which case the marriage
pictures can be magically added. Don’t ask me why they can be included here but
not in any other type of report. I’ll leave the decision to use the Publishing
Center up to each person because the learning curve to get it all appearing
right can take some time.

I believe what Leon was talking about was to create a new marriage event and
calling it “Family Picture”. Then the date and location can be added just as
any other event and the picture attached to that event. Now whenever a report
is generated that is set to include source detail pictures, that family photo
would be printed.

There is another downside to all this. Normally, the pictures printed on a
report are of a very small size, selected as either Small, Medium, or Large in
the Pictures Tab of the Report Options. If it is indeed a group photo which I
presume includes multiple persons at some sort of a family reunion type event,
then picking out a single face on even the Large size photo becomes problematic.

There is another option for photo size instead of Small, Medium, or Large, and
that is to select “Custom Picture Area”….. try experimenting with 2”, 3” or 4”
to see how that turns out.

But there is a downside to that. The selection of a Custom Picture Area just so
you can see the individual faces in a group photo also means that every other
photo in the report gets printed out in that super-sized image. It’s all or
nothing. It all depends on the clarity of the photograph, how many people are
in it, and hopefully you DID NOT save that photo in a low resolution to be used
by Legacy as suggested by some forum users and support people (hard drive space
is sooooo cheap, why economize on photo quality? ---this is another discussion
that has already been addressed over and over so it’s an individual choice.)

I might suggest to just print your normal report in Legacy and then print out a
full size image of the group photo on a single sheet of paper using a different
program or directly from Windows and then staple it to the report. The learning
curve for this operation is a flat line.

I normally add them as a marriage event -- Family Picture.

That picture would then be printed as part of the Husband & Wife Reports and
would have the other family (children) members.

You could add an event to each person, but the family marriage event, in my
opinion, works the best. Otherwise, you will have repeating pictures in
reports if you add the same event & picture for each person.

What do you recommend as the best way to add a family group photo to
legacy? I'm debating adding them to marriage gallery or add a copy to
each person in photo.
