I use Thunderbird too, and have the same experience with these  symbols
turning up.

I find they only appear when I put two spaces between a full stop and
the start of the next sentence, so try to not do that when posting to
this mailing list. I was taught to type that way, so it is automatic to
type two spaces after a full stop (period).

PS I also usually send in plain text, but I don't think that changes
anything.  Testing here to see (two spaces before this sentence, set to
plain text).
