That's a really nice book. I always wanted to do something like that only I don't know how I'm going to split all the lines. Like you have done with yours, a little history thrown in makes a big difference.
I've read both good and bad about Rootsmagic and I don't have any personal experience with it. It's certainly more expensive than Legacy, but not as overpriced as FTM which is still running at full price even though it will no longer be available after the end of the year. I started off with FTM long ago and would have stuck with it if they hadn't gone the route they went starting with the 2008/2009 versions. I'm still cleaning up the mess from FTM 2009 after exporting/importing into Legacy as a GEDCOM. If you have to export from FTM to a GEDCOM, make sure the box that says something about moving unknown text to Notes is not checked. I checked it and all of my Source Details (Citations in FTM) were moved to the Comments section. It created a nightmare that started in 2009. I have to go through thousands of people to fix it. The good thing about it is I can go back to people I haven't checked on in years and update their information. The fortunate thing about most genealogy programs is you can export to an RTF format then produce your own look. It might take some extra effort if you were to copy and paste into MS Word where a custom template would work better in this case. In Legacy, you can create it as a webpage then customize it in a cheap or free HTML program for layout purposes then export to a PDF. I want to be able to produce the book without much effort when I make additions to my family tree/history. I looked at the family group sheet in both RM and Legacy 8. Neither looked like they would produce the clean look of the one I have in my pdf. Also, I think the pedigree chart background and having pics of each person makes it nice to look at. And I need to be able to make pages such as you see in this book: Chicago Fire, Castle Garden Immigration, etc. - these are not connected to any person. In FTM you can make a text page and copy and paste pictures onto it. I do have to say that I like the cleaner, less complicated feel of Rootsmagic but I feel like Legacy will be closer to what I need for book publishing. I do appreciate your patience and kindness in talking to me about these things. I know FTM will probably work for many years and maybe I just need to be patient and see what comes down the road. I just don't want to put a lot more effort into something I know I will have to totally redo when I move to another program (the books, the family history portion at first glance seems to have imported fairly well).
