Gwen, Once set, your colour scheme should survive closing and re-opening the program. Are you by any chance continually deleting or renaming Documents\Legacy Family Tree\ folder? The \_AppData\ folder in that folder holds your settings.
However, you can save your own colour schemes. If you are using Options - Change Colours, when you're done, instead of just Closing out, click the Options button on that pink square and you'll see the option to Save your current scheme. If you are using Options -Customise - 9 then 9.4 allows you to Save your colour scheme. It sounds as if you have saved one in the past. Vintage solar is not an inbuilt option.
