June,
You can unlink someone and therefore unlink their whole branch.
eg if you have a SMITH grandfather and you right click on him and unlink
from spouse, then you will have unlinked all his SMITH ancestors and
their families from your main tree - but they will still all be linked
together.
You can see how many separate trees in a file by going to View - Trees -
and click the Refresh if you've been there before.
This means that you'll have to keep unlinking and linking back as you
work on the tree.
It may be better to tag this branch making sure you note why you have
tagged them in Advanced tagging so that you don' t use this tag # for
something else.
When you've checked untag them (or tag them when you've checked them -
your choice. I prefer to tag first and untag as I go so I have some idea
of where I am in the project.)
If you haven't found them, there are source spots for Relationship to
Father and Relationship to Mother on the Assigned Sources screen for
each person and it's a good idea to use them especially when you have
these complicated things to sort out.
Good luck
Cathy

On my tree I have a direct line that I will call SMITH. Unfortunately
within
this Smith group there are several called John (all born around the same
time) several called Michael (all born around the same time) etc many of
these being cousins or second cousins.
I have a feeling that I have put the wrong children with parents, and
therefore their children are connected incorrectly.
I've tried to look at each family grouping to see if I can sort it out but
it's difficult. I've got a John Smith born 1700 with son John Smith and
another one born 1710 with a son John Smith and still another one born say
1705.
I am thinking that my best bet would be to unlink the first Smith to link
into my tree, thereby hopefully unlinking them all. Then start attaching
them one by one back into the tree - but only when I have double checked
that I have the right person (although I thought that I had).
So I need to unlink my first Smith and all their connections, either by
blood or marriage from my main Coates file. Is this possible and if so
how.
Or is there an easier solution?
Thank you
June
