Okay. So, if the picture is not embedded, and the software only links to
the picture, then the media (picture, sound file, video, document) is
only accessible on the specific computer where the media was set up?
That would be an example of an element of the family tree file that
would not export and then import as a GEDCOM?

Yes, in Legacy 8 you have the option to attach a picture, a sound file,
a video or a document. It does only link to the picture, does not
embed it, but it has a couple of nifty features called Media Relinker
and Gather My Media which do pretty much what it says on the tin.
