Same thing happened to me. Luckily I had kept my v8 installer. I agree with Kris that this behavior is unacceptable. The v9 installer must at least ask permission before deleting the old version.

So download and reinstall 8. It's not impossible.

I paid for and installed v.9 against my better judgement. No problem, I'm
thinking, I can always revert to v.8 as I've made all the backups, etc. So
I've been mostly happily using v.8.

Over the weekend, I hit the wrong button and accidentally opened v.9. I
realized my mistake when it wanted to convert my family file, so I said,
"No thanks" and closed the program.

Today, I wanted to open v.8 and -- it's gone. It's not there anymore. The
entire directory has been deleted.

So, v.9 does not only delete v.8 on install. This is completely
unacceptable and NOT standard practice. I have every version of Open
Office, for instance, on my computer as I used to do a lot of QA with that
project. New versions do not delete old versions.

NEVER have I EVER had a new version of ANY program remove a previous
version.

There are a lot of reasons people might keep old versions of software. One
of them might be that they PAID for it? I paid for v.8. v.9 does
inappropriate things without notice or warning -- though even in that case
it wouldn't be acceptable.

I wondered why I kept getting "malware" warnings when I was using v.9 and
had to white list it. It's on the black list now.
