Well, after I restarted my computer, attempted to open Legacy (without success I thought) and was doing something else, at that point Legacy opened!! I did the file maintenance routine (nothing seemed to be wrong) AND the image I'd tried (I thought unsuccessfully) to add was there! So all is well--thanks for all your suggestions!! Especially, Wendy, restarting my computer -- perhaps I hadn't done that previously, tho' it's usually the first thing I do when I have problems.
