Joyce,
It depends what I'm doing whether I prefer the Index View (which I do
for finding someone or for comparing people of the same name) or the
Name List/Search List (which I do if I need to edit the same thing for a
number of people).
RE the Index View columns. When you have them as you like them, use the
Options button - Customise Columns and save that set of columns. It
saves the widths as well.
Then if they've changed, right click on the column headers and choose
the set of columns you want. I save various sets bringing different
items closer to the name - eg preferred spouse, relationship, particular
tag, etc

For me I like that the tabs on the right give me access to a lot more
info than the Index View ever could, including sources, immediate
family members, all events, etc. I can also edit the person or use
buttons on the right to add events and cite sources.

Can someone please explain to me the advantages of using the Name list
vs the Index? I personally prefer the Index as it displays all the
information across the screen (i.e. name, sex, birth date, birth
place, death date & death place). You can adjust the column widths,
but they only hold until you close down Legacy. When you restart, you
will have to reset your column widths.
