Teresa,
I think you need to decide how you are going to use the Hints.
They can be Bright Shiny Objects that send you shooting off in different
directions.
They can simply have already done the search you would do when you come
to research a particular person or family.
No doubt there are other ways of seeing them.
I mainly use them in the second way so simply ignore them unless I'm
working on a particular family for a particular reason. And even then if
I'm really focussed on a particular research task, I ignore any hints
not relevant to that.
In the Hints settings at 8.13 you can choose to only see Hints you
haven't viewed before. This operates on a site basis so you may have
only followed up one FMP hint and they'll all disappear.
Also in the Hints settings you can refresh all Hints or Hints for just
one site. They will all refresh after the number of days that you've
entered or the default 120 days. This overrides the hiding of Hints
you've seen before.
So if you want to keep track of who you've used Hints for, it's worth
using a tag for Hints or a tag for each Hint site you use. They're more
permanent.
Hints are only fetched for people that you see on Family View or on
Pedigree View. Hints can be seen on other views and in the Name List and
accessed from those views but new Hints aren't being fetched for people
looked at in the Name List etc.
You can search for who has hints in Search - Find - Detailed Search
Hints - What actual Hint items are available to search on depends on
your settings at Options - Customise 8.13. eg if you have Hints off, you
won't see any items.
That may help.

It sounds crazy to be complaining about too many hints, but I'm
swamped. I have 572 people in my direct line + spouses + a few others.
And because they come from two close-knit Scottish communities, with
much duplication of names, I have many hundreds of hints from
FindMyPast. About 2/3 of the ones I have looked at are attached to the
right person.
How do people handle hints? is there a way to clear the hints for an
individual without actually opening at least the hints page?
I couldn't find a way to search for people who have, or do not have,
hints pending. I can see them in the name list of course.
Many hints are duplicates - e.g. a census record will turn up as a
hint for husband, wife and children. With a large family the same hint
might be reported 8 times.
Any advice from the wise ones on the list?
Teresa
