Re the plus next to relationships. As Michele says, it shows you are related more than one way. You need to RIGHT CLICK and choose View additional relationships in order to see the other relationships.

The blue + to the right of parents on Family View enables you to add another set of parents. It opens the Parents List in the same way that clicking on the Parent icon underneath one of the main people on Family View does.

The plus next to names in the Child area of Family View and other symbols are as Dean reported. What you see is controlled by Options - Customise 3.8
