Terry,
Some way you have an unknown/blank partner. When you are in the centre
in Family View, note that the spouse icon for you has a 1. Right click
on yourself and choose Unlink from spouse.

The blue + to the right of parents on Family View enables you to add
another set of parents. It opens the Parents List in the same way
that clicking on the Parent icon underneath one of the main people on
Family View does.
The plus next to names in the Child area of Family View and other
symbols are as Dean reported. What you see is controlled by Options -
Customise 3.8
