When I want to remove formatting I open a Notepad, copy the text into it, then copy-and-cut the text. Bingo, all formatting has gone because Notepad doesn't do formatting.

One way to remove the unwanted parts from RTF is to open in Microsoft Word, then Save as _plain text_. It may be quicker than deleting all the formatting code.  Then open the saved file in Notepad to copy/paste into Legacy FT if plain text is what you want there.
