Gloria, Cathy has described the differences for backup options you mentioned in your original post. One suggestion I’d add is to consider utilizing the Legacy Cloud backup option that comes with Legacy 9 deluxe (maybe standard, too??). You will be required to register so that there is an account specifically for you but that’s easy and simple to do. When you set up the account, you will need to create a password so only you can access your Legacy Cloud account. Use something you can remember easily and write it down somewhere. Once you register and Legacy knows you and your account information, it is simple to choose that option on the backup window and then it runs automatically. I use this backup at least once a day and sometimes more if I’m doing a lot of work. I also use Carbonite and backup to a separate drive but this Legacy Cloud backup is great for what it does. Simple and fast. I hope everyone takes advantage of it. This backup is only for your database file, NOT media, so if you also attach media (photos and documents), that must be backed up separately to another source. But to have this protection for your database file and to be able to so easily restore it, if needed, is a great bonus option offered by Legacy. You've mentioned 3 completely different tools the cloud offers. Carbonite is a true backup system. Its equivalents are Back Blaze and iDrive, etc Dropbox is a convenient way to share files between your own computers and with other people you choose to share a file or a folder with. Secondarily it's an out of the house backup but shouldn't be your only backup. Because any change you make in the Dropbox folder on your computer syncs/overwrites/deletes what was in the Dropbox Cloud. Its equivalents are Google Drive, OneDrive, etc Evernote is primarily for Note taking, for storing things you clip from the web. Yes you can add files to a note and to that extent it is "in the cloud" but that's not the primary purpose. The magic of Evernote is the search so you can find things easily. If you have one of the paid versions the search will also include PDFs and Docs you have added and text on images. You can group notes via tags or put them in themed Notebooks - but the key is you can find things again with a simple search. You can also set reminders on tags so you can save something and make sure it's not completely forgotten by adding a reminder. For genealogy I use it to save things that are probably relevant but I need to do more work to be more certain. I also use it for things I know are relevant but I haven't got time to enter into Legacy properly at the moment - either because I really should be doing something else OR because I'm trying to keep focussed on a particular task but have tripped over this other interesting thing I don't want to lose sight of. There is an excellent book for how to use Evernote for Genealogy. It's called: How to use Evernote for Genealogists by Kerry Scott. I have it as a Kindle E-book. (There's a good Facebook group called Evernote for Genealogists but I guess since you are here and not on the Legacy User Group Facebook page, you don't use Facebook. Note however that you can use Facebook just for the myriad of useful groups and lock down almost everything.) Its equivalent is Microsoft's OneNote. They work a bit differently and each has their fans. Cathy Gloria DeSousa wrote: Has anyone had experience using Evernote for their cloud storage? My genealogy library recommended the free version of Evernote over Dropbox but I haven't found it easy to use. I gave up using it last year, and can't remember why exactly. I rely on Carbonite for everything on my laptop. Is DropBox better than Carbonite for genealogy or anything else for that matter? I also have an external hard drive that I use for backup, but only every few months rather than daily, because it's either too old or I'm too old to figure out how to have it backup automatically. I know how important it is to have cloud storage, and would like it done seamlessly. I certainly wouldn't do it when travelling as internet connections vary. I don't do it here at home either as my connection speed varies a lot. It's very easy to get conflicted copies unless you have really fast, reliable internet connection. I do keep my Legacy Media and my Legacy Backups in Dropbox. 99.9% of the time I make sure that my backup has synced to the cloud before closing down. I keep all really important data in the cloud, especially in bushfire season. Cathy Jenny M Benson wrote: On 27/07/2018 21:38, Bob Austen wrote: I use DropBox but ONLY for backup. Use a media card for backup while you are away. If you have made any changes to the file (while away) then copy the laptop file back to the desktop once you get home and everything will be up to date. Please be aware of syncing cloud based data, especially if this is your main file source. The cloud based data is NOT a multiuser program. I would strongly recommend using it only for backup. Because I work mainly on my desktop computer, but from time to time use my laptop for a few days, I keep my Legacy Family File in Dropbox. I have done this for some time now and never had a problem. I backup regularly to other locations. it is just important to remember to allow time for Dropbox to update before switching off either device after use. I don't know about the other services because I don't use them.
