John (Cardinal)
Thank you for the informative information. I seldom - almost never - have used
.GED import or export. But I think I have read that improvements and a
non-official later version has not been accepted/adopted (I will check
Wikipedia, which gives good peer-reviewed information).

However, as I posted before, really there was only the ONE error and due to the
code-page format in the text, for my use of GEDCOM Validator.

I am totally sceptical that my UK correspondent's problem when just exporting a
.GED file to send to me caused him internal database problems, loss of
information, etc. I think something else "has gone wrong". He uses Family Tree
Maker, but I am not yet aware of which version. Certainly it would be more
recent than FTM 2006 which I have had for years (and installed and used for the
first time ever last week).

Regarding the Validator: I think it may be a worthwhile tool to have. Tweaking
the "Severity" is important after choosing the "Standards only" Validation
mode.
Also, within the Settings (top right, click the standard cog-wheel symbol)
there are useful functions, including Encoding repair.

John, perhaps you can explain what the Blob decoder does. My guess is that
attached media is handled, but I don't know if the GEDCOM 5.5 standard caters
for that.

Ian,

I have used GEDCOM Validator by Chronoplex. I forget exactly where I found it,
but I did not get it via the Windows Store. I use it with Windows 7.
