I have noticed that new added people do not always show up in the index straight away. You can cause it to refresh by putting the cursor in say the firstname or family name box near the top of the index.

I think you would need to add that person to your family file as an unlinked individual (I am presuming they are not related to your family, or a relationship is not yet found.)
