Ian,
Although when Switching from Family tree maker format to LEGACY the end
result is a smaller size file. The way the gedcom export/import is done
makes a difference.

I have used many Genealogy program to find the Ultimate User Friendly,
Consistant Data entry,
Favorite Features, Constant FREE upgrades!! etc etc etc......(Drum roll
please...LEGACY ... take a bow)

Some have problems with Gedcoms.
Problem: Ftw file says (example 2meg)
Imported to Family tree: If this is not your file say you down loaded it
from the web or from a WFT disk. What happens is Family Tree auto sources
every Event you entered with
BBD Wft vol such anch tree such and such date etc. This is kind of like the
choice LEGACY gives us if we chose auto Source and say we said yes. We could
auto Source every record we were importing it goes into the first box in
Legacy (says unspecified).
Auto source is great I use it if multiple cousins have sent me there data
(26 and counting)
I first import them each from (family tree maker for example - auto source
to either the tree number or if from the web Such & such Rsrch By WhoEver
Date tie-add name it ties into), After doing this They are all legacy files
and can import all into Legacy yes while you do end up with lots of
duplicates, this File name then became Same name as my original...
Example: WebbMaster.fdb (this is my file)
Webb Resrch.fdb (This works real well as many different
cousin do not always agree on the same data)
Now you can view and have 2 legacy files open at same time (so seeing how we
are all familiar with who are indiviual key Ancesters are. First you might
look at them, its very easy to pick out if they have more info or sources
you may not have found.) You can cut and paste notes from resrch file
into master.... Delete rsch.fdb notes for that person.

Some other importing tips: Not all events import the same in to other
programs with out
1. Making a large list file, because if you chose to export say
RelationsipStatus: Father-Natural from Fam tree maker, the wording is
different between Legacy so I choose not to expot that item from fam tree.
(If you chose all of famtree maker item you have a choice to put
unrecognized tags either in notes or a list file. I choose a List file.
Then you see the unrecognized items. If it Status I don't worry about it.
As when I import legacy to legacy appending file I get to chose what to keep
: ) thus I don't have a gazillion unwanted notes : )

Tip before you import you have an option what to import. If it is an
unrecognized tag in any other program you end up with unwanted notes, such
and such ... List file better choice. But also consider if some had a
custom tag, and notes and sources you would not get that either....

View those closely....

Usually before importing Legacy to Legcagy file- that was gedcom in from
famtreemaker. Look at your Master Place list in the New Legacy file first.
Are the ,,, in the right place. I doubt it. With Family tree maker there is
not that consistency. Say you have one city name capitalized and not
another of the same name... fam tree has to entries of the same thing...
This is real easy to edit in Legacy..... getting data entry consistant
helps! It Is best imported from one legacy file into another after this is
done. Will also cut down on the amount of merges...

Don't know if these tips have helped or if I have conveyed what I do to
where it makes sense, I hope so...

I experienced a similar dilemma when I recently switched from FTM to Legacy
as
well. I found my gedcom file had attached text to every marriage which only
applied to a single event. I had more than 5,000 marriages with unwanted
text.

I was ultimately able to delete the unwanted text by using the Search and
Replace feature where the unwanted text was pasted into the Find box and the
Replace box was left empty. Perhaps someone with more Legacy experience
might
know if this would also be the method for you to use.

Best regards,

Henry Sutliff
