Thank you Ken - got it figured out now. It just didn't occur to me that '1st
spouse' would refer to the first I happened to enter for an individual,
rather than the first by date. Wish there was a macro to set order
globally -- I have a long day's work ahead.

It all depends on which field you have selected to have displayed.  There
are several choices.  Open the Name List and change to the Detail tab.  Then
Right Click on one of the labels on the detail tab.  This will open up the
Customize Name List Detail Information screen.  You can then click on any of
the eight Select buttons an select the information you would like to have
displayed.  If you click on the Default's button it will reset the eight
fields to the original settings and the seventh one will say Preferred
Spouse for Field Name and *Spouse for Long Name to Display.
