Hi Mary, These "pop-ups" can be caused by several things. If you use a high speed internet connection and are on-line all the time, the pop-ups can occur anytime your internet browser is active. The cure here is to shut down the browser when you're not using it.
The second most common reason is a variant of spyware where some unscrupulous advertiser installs software on your computer that can periodically bring these things up. You can download free spyware killers at www.download.com Third thing I can think of is that your ISP (sympatico.ca) may be doing this. Some ISPs "sell" advertising and exhibit it on your computer without your knowledge or consent. Juno is a great example of this. Finally, there are several free software packages available that can zap these pop-up ads. You still get them but the software keeps them from showing up on your screen. While these programs work pretty well, I would start with the the checks I outlined above and see if they work for you before adding yet another program that that eats up system resources to your computer.
