There is an excellent spyware killer called "ad-aware", latest version is 5.83. I could recommend it to everyone. It tries to strip the spyware part from a program without interfering with the program itself. Some programs will not function after this but if you still want it you easily install it again (incl. the spyware). You can then instruct ad-aware to ingnore this spyware.
Ad-aware can be downloaded at http://www.lavasoft.nu/index.html Wim [-----Oorspronkelijk bericht----- [Van: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [[mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]Namens Jim Winfrey [Verzonden: zondag 15 december 2002 15:35 [Aan: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [Onderwerp: Re: [LegacyUG] Advertising box [ [ [Hi Mary, [ [These "pop-ups" can be caused by several things. If you use a high speed [internet connection and are on-line all the time, the pop-ups can occur [anytime your internet browser is active. The cure here is to shut down the [browser when you're not using it. [ [The second most common reason is a variant of spyware where some [unscrupulous advertiser installs software on your computer that can [periodically bring these things up. You can download free spyware killers [at www.download.com [ [Third thing I can think of is that your ISP (sympatico.ca) may be doing [this. Some ISPs "sell" advertising and exhibit it on your computer without [your knowledge or consent. Juno is a great example of this. [ [Finally, there are several free software packages available that can zap [these pop-up ads. You still get them but the software keeps them from [showing up on your screen. While these programs work pretty well, I would [start with the the checks I outlined above and see if they work for you [before adding yet another program that that eats up system [resources to your [computer.
