The husband taking his wife's surname is not that unusual in Norway or the
older countries that comprise Germany today.

I use the surname at birth for both the man and the woman. When they have
been known by another surname later in life, I have added that as an AKA.
This  allows a "cleaner" tracing a child's ancestry.

Just to add to the "problem". I have a German colleague at work who took on
his wife's surname when they got married!
