Hi Robert It is a good idea to use PSP this way and like you I do use various 'non-Legacy' methods to identify photos. However, I still think that Legacy could handle this well if it was set up differently. As I am scanning in a lot of documents as well as photos I am increasingly finding that the Legacy caption, comments and filename are not at all useful.
1 While I have separate identification for my images, when I use them in Legacy I want to use Legacy in the same way I would a Source or any other information to record this. 2 Legacy does not associate its comments in the database with the photograph but to the event in which you use the photograph. When you use the photograph again with another event (eg the spouse on a tombstone) the comments have to be re-entered. Worse, if you delete the event but not the photograph, the comments are lost. 3 Another oddity is that Legacy does allows you to enter comments and a file reference in the picture centre to the photo when viewed in 'Picture List' but doesn't use this when you attach it to an event - you have to re-enter it. To me this isn't sensible - an image is the same image where ever it is used. I believe that the picture should be treated like a master source and the file reference and comments applied in the "Master" are universal. There should also be the ability to associate additional comments to the picture when it is attached to the event so you can make notes on how it is associated to that event. For example the 'master' of a wedding group photo would have a unique file number and a unique comment like "The Lynn family at Fred's wedding". When it was attached to Jane, it would still have the same file number and the comment "The Lynn family at Fred's wedding", but you could add "Jane is fourth from right in the front row" to just that event. Perhaps it could have a separate file reference associated with that particular event as well, but I can't see how this would be used. Actually on second thoughts it does sort of do this - the info entered in Picture Centre / Picture list IS the master information. The problem is that this is not kept with the image when it is attached. If the info was simply retained (ie the Date / Cation / Comment / file ref) when it was attached and protected (ie these fields remain part of the master so changes made are reflected in all uses), and if there was an additional comment field added to the event, it would work wonderfully. Could Ken or Dave give us their comments on this? Perhaps I am missing something and I am using this feature incorrectly? It is a potentially very powerful tool, but as it stands it seems very limited. I would like to see it work like a source with 'master comments' which are always associated with the picture and 'local comments', which relate only to the specific event. <End> If and when I know the person/s in the photo, I immediately make a label for it and stick on the back. This would be a good time to ask if anyone has any "Outlining" software, that is software that will scan a photo but instead of the photo itself, it gives you the outline of everyone there. You can print the outline and write in everyone's names. But back on the subject, if the photo is of my GG-Uncle on a farm, I will make a copy of the photo and use Photo Shop, or PSP, and write the names and locations below the photo. This is the one I use in Legacy, I don't need the caption to ID the people or make comments. If I do +not+ know the people in the photo, I can't identify it, but it is useful anyway, THEN I use the Caption field to make comments. I make use of the caption, date, and comment fields. I would hate to do without them. But I do take the time whenever possible to embed all I know about it below the photo. That way, no matter when it is shown, the comments, etc., also appear. I hope that made sense.
