Andy,

I'm guessing you must have not had the selection in the store for comparison
of devices between Palms and PocketPC's... Both device types are fairly
equivalent in price when you match feature for feature. One device you
won't find in the store which costs about $200 is the Dell Axim X5. (I'm
assuming that's about what you spent on the Tungsten E)

CompUsa, Fry's, and Staples (And I imagine any other place that sells them)
now have ViewSonic V36 PocketPC's for $199 after $100 rebate. One
"exciting" feature with the V36 is a built-in digital camera.

One factor to keep in mind before buying a device... Check out the software
FIRST as once you buy the device, you are "stuck" with whatever Genealogy
software is available for the device.

I've been working on improving the user guide, here is a link for the latest
draft. (You need Adobe Acrobat to view) It's about a 2MB file.

For Legacy users, you may want to look on page 21 as it shows the options
you can enable/disable for the different data elements for transfer to the
device. With the exception of images, pretty much everything else is
available to transfer out of Legacy. (With the "Advanced" version of Pocket
Genealogist, it will read the data directly from the Legacy database)

Also, if you just want to see some screen prints using the Legacy sample
data, you can find it here:

http://www.pocketgenealogist.com/screens_legacy.htm

I'm about to start work on the 2-way synchronization code for Legacy... In
other words, you should be able to directly import data into Pocket
Genealogist, change the data, then export it back directly into the Legacy
database. This is going to be a challenge and I'll keep interested parties
updated on the progress on the Pocket Genealogist public beta email list.

Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Complete newbie to Palm

Thankyou to all who gave info on & off list, it was very helpful, thank you.

I couldn't justify the extra expense of a Pocket PC, and I am now the proud
owner of a Palm Tungsten E On having a good look at it, I found that it
takes the same memory card as my digital camera so I already a 64mb card &
card reader :-) So far, I haven't had to store on the card, so I am using it
for storing Family History pictures & files for showing to relatives.

I am now trying Gedwise and Gedstar
For research purposes, I am going to use Word to Go, Tasks & Notepad for
recording my research.

Once again, thankyou for your input.
