Hi List,
I'm new to both Legacy and Genealogy, and have been picking up lots of tips
from this very helpful forum. Legacy is one of the best pieces of software
I have used, in any area - it is easy to use but has incredible depth and
attention to detail. The responsiveness of the developers to users'
detailed requirements appears to be exemplary!

I'm currently wrestling with two issues relating to Locations, and would
appreciate your advice. I'm a 3rd generation Australian, with ancestors from
various parts of Europe.

1. Is it possible to get short location names to appear almost everywhere
(the exception is location data entry fields, I think), or is there some
alternative way to get readable names? I can find two options to use short
location names - on the family view, and on some reports only.
I use Geo (which is great!) so try to adopt long location names like
"Berlin, , Berlin, Germany" that match Geo. These are consistent, but hard
to read. I'm reluctant to edit the long names, as it loses the link to Geo,
so would prefer to see the short names used, which I can edit for
readability - my preferred syntax varies by country and location (in this
example: "Berlin, Germany"). How do others cope with this?

2. How do people handle alternative location names? Several lines from my
family come from places that have gone through dramatic name changes,
depending on the political boundaries over time. (eg. Wildenhagen in
Germany became Linden in Poland; Bielitz in Prussia became Biela-Bielsko in
Poland). Should I cite the name as it existed at the time of the event (my
preference) or the current name (which is consistent with Geo, and
unambiguous)? I would really like an "AKA" feature for Locations like the
excellent feature for people's names. At present, I cite the name at the
time of the event, using the Lat Long and notes to match the different
names, but it's hard to locate everyone from the same location. How do
others do this? Is there a plan for a Location AKA feature?

I'm using V5 Deluxe, latest build.

Thanks.

Rob
