The big advantage of My Documents is that you can navigate to it easily from anywhere. BUT it is just a shortcut, so you can point it to the top of your data directory tree wherever that may be. (Right Click on My Documents, select Properties then browse to or enter the path of your new location.) Then you have the best of both worlds, and as others have said it makes sense to put the Legacy data in a Legacy Data folder under that location. (Elizabeth - My Documents used this way just points to the root directory of your data partition).

Sorry if we've strayed a little off topic, but is relevant to secure backup of Legacy data!

Cheers,
Rob

I put all my data on another drive, with different folder names. They are all in one place for backup. If you don't have another drive (mine is actually a partition) you could start several separate folders. I think "My Documents" for everything is a stupid idea and I will not use it.

That I know, thanks....all my genealogy is within folders under MyDocs. I'm just whining because I believe apps should not default to storing data within program folders, where the data can so easily get overlooked in a data backup and lost forever. After 20 years of intense computing I think I know a little about data preservation.

'Tis not just Legacy, others include Lotus Smartsuite, and even worse is Outlook Express, which buries both email and address book about 10 layers deep within XP's stupid "Documents and Settings", which it can only restore when moving everything to a different computer. After 20 years Bill Gates has learned so much about protecting his own butt and making it so extremely difficult for the rest of us to protect our own!

Sorry, that's getting off-Legacy. I'm just tired and PO'd with all gymnastics of all this stuff!

Ron,

Legacy will place data files anywhere that you specify. You need to
go to [Options] [Customize...] [Locations] and then enter your desired
directory under [Default location of family files].

Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Setting/Clearing Relationships [and
reinstallation of v.5 build 173]

Update 3:

I have now invested perhaps another 15 hours on this issue, mostly on
non-Legacy XPhomeSP2 and related basic maintenance, which included a full
virus scan, running checks with SpybotSD and Registry Mechanic, and finally
reinstallation of XP2. It remains possible that there is some hardware
problem with my trusty old PII-300. I'll now skip all those stories as
being "non-Legacy", saying this only so that you all know that diligent
efforts were made to eliminate OS problems from the subject issue.

I downloaded the full latest/greatest Legacy to D\...\Installers\ folder and
ran setup from there, running into several installation aberrations which
definitely need fixing. These aberrations never previously occurred in
either the initial download of v.5, nor in any of the numerous ensuing Build
updates.

In starting the installation, immediately a message appeared that
"unknown publisher" could not be verified. Not good PR, Millennia -- surely
you don't want that happening to new customers!

The usual installation options screen did not appear, but rather
preceeded immediately to showing only a small progress-bar window which also
showed the path/files as they were copied.

So without asking "where", Legacy installed to C:\Legacy\, despite that
my existing installation in C:\Program Files\Legacy5 had not been removed
(because the Install.Log was missing and caused removal failure). This I
did not appreciate, as my "organized mode" says I install everything in
Program Files, and opine that Legacy ought conform to the norm!

I also dislike that Legacy defaults to storing datafiles within it's
application folder rather than in MyDocs. My reasoning is that (1) *IF* all
data is in MyDocs, one might have some hope that data is not missed in a
backup, (especially worrisome on a reformat!), and (2) User-data is easier
to find if all is within MyDocs. (okay, okay, I rename My Documents). So
"moving right along"..

I did 2 reinstalls. The first reinstallation at 91% complete, got a
message "could not load the DLL library C:\\DOCUME~1/......GLF80.tmp --
The specificed module could not be found." Clicking OK allowed the
installation to proceed to a reboot message. Afterward, tho, in opening
Legacy, "Legacy.exe could not be found"!! That was really strange, as
Legacy.exe did exist in C:\Legacy\. Also strange is that I was never asked
for the initial Standard Version password, as in an update rather than a
wipeout/full reinstall.

So I then did all the OS fixes above, uninstalled Legacy and reinstalled
once more. The 2nd installation ran the same as the first, except no error
messages. I had saved my *.usr files and overwrote those in the new Legacy
directory. I then (*use at your own risk!!*) moved the entire C:\Legacy to
C:\Program Files\Legacy 5, ran Registry Mechanic, and finally got to start
Legacy this morning. Apparently I got away with the move, as Legacy seems
to run normally.

Now to the bottom line -- the initial subject of Setting/Clearing
Relationships. Now, with the lates build 173 installed, the problems
remain, perhaps a little different now, I can't say, but still there, and I
shall attempt to define my efforts. I have done check/repair etc several
times, and fiddled with set/clear relationships, and have changed the
primary person several times, and see these apparent problems, which boil
down to just one.

1) in Index View, regardless whether relationships are set or cleared,
and otherwise regardless of who is designated primary person, myself (Gen
14) and direct ancestors remain "bold", EXCEPT for (Gen. 1).

2) again in Index view, setting myself as primary person, those "bolded"
remain the same. None of my children and grandchildren are bold. Also,
only direct-line individuals are "bold". It seems that nothing done in
set/change relationships will change the bolding.

3) in Family or Pedigree View, it seems now to be showing branches
(aunts, uncles, cousins, etc) correctly, but in Index View none of those are
"bolded".

***************************************
So now the problem appears to be only with the *Bolding* code in Index
View, which does not change no matter who is designated primary, and
*maybe*(can't tell as it now functions) does not bold branch individuals.
Legacy, we need a fix here, or do I just need to delete some certain *.usr
file???
***************************************
Just to be clear, none of this attempts to address other issues posted
regarding multiple relationships. I have rarely gone into that arena, as I
have enough confusion in my life!

Sorry this is so long. I know it's all rather boring unless one is
experiencing ditto!

Subject: [LegacyUG] Setting/Clearing Relationships

I just now had a shocker while looking up a distant cousin, and noting that
no relationship was appearing. I then noticed that many other connections
were also not showing.

So I "set relationships" and no change; then I "clear relationship", but
those relationships which had shown did not clear. I then restarted
Legacy and tried again, but no change.

Running XPhome SP2 and Legacy 5.0.0.170. I will mention that I have
recently going thru the throes of my worst-ever computer crash. I thought
that all had been properly restored, but the computer is very sluggish and
seems a bit strange. My BitDefender AV has recently caught an unusually
high number of viruses trying to intrude via email. I ran virus scan
yesterday, which I had to quit at 43% done but no virus found that far.

Anyone else? Any help out there?

thanks
