My what a fascinating thread in the LOONNG Digest I've been
reading for the last hour!

Yes, Jack. It's quite normal. But what people are normally
called and what is recorded in genealogical databases are not
necessarily the same thing.
As LB pointed out, you are entitled to record your data by
whatever method you see fit. I think LB goes a bit far when
he/she asks you not to share it with "anyone else". Unless
of course LB was joking.
Even if I don't do things your way, you do have a logical system
and if we had some common lines I personally wouldn't mind sharing
data with you. Got any French Canadian ancestors?
My mother's maiden name was Evelyn Joan Richer.
When she married my father she went by Evelyn Richer Bayle.
I saw her sign checks that way and they didn't get bounced for
bad signature!
My wife's maiden name is Marcia Denise Eldred.
When we got married she "changed" her name to Marcia Denise Bayle.
My wife also writes checks as my mom did without problems.
My wife claims that her way is the legal way. I dunno. I'm not a lawyer.
They are both recorded in my databases using their Maiden names.
Recording all of a woman's married surnames seems redundant to
me, esp. when Legacy allows one to look up couples. Also nobody
in my family with whom I've shared reports has complained that
the women are all recorded with their maiden names instead of their
married names.
