I know that filing by number is not ideal. I file by record type in a
surname binder. I can't remember the details of Cathy's method. Maybe what
I'm about to suggest is very similar. This afternoon the thought occurred to
me that filing by record type behind locality dividers or folders might be
more effective than behind surnames. This is my logic.

I obtain a document, type the information into Legacy under the people it
pertains to either in notes or in events--then depending on the nature of
the document, I would then scan it in so that the image will be linked to
those individuals as well. After I've gone through this process, I then
write the identification number in the upper right hand corner and circle it
to show that the data entry is completed. I can click on one of the names
anytime to view the data or image. Therefore, doesn't it then make more
sense to file the paper copy by something other than the individual, number,
or surname? Filing it by locality would put neighbors and unlinked
individuals together by record type. This puts clues together at an entirely
different angle-communities rather than families. It arranges the
information in two separate modes. The ID # is in the upper right hand
corner of each document so that I know the individual it ties to in my
database. It becomes a cross-reference.

Does this make sense or should I be napping?

I agree with Sue. We all have to find a system that works best for our
individual needs. I am not comfortable with numbers. I would love to file
under surnames. Unfortunately, my Danes did not have surnames before
1830-1870, so filing by surname is not an option. My family will understand
my method because I will explain it to them. If anyone else wants my
information, they are welcome to it, but they will have to do the work to
incorporate it into their own system. Unfortunately, there is no
one-way-fits-all in genealogy.

Thank you, Sue, for your excellent explanation of the Dollarhide system. As
far as stable numbering goes, this looks like a good option. But, when it
comes to filing paper documents, I think Cathy's (and others') method of
filing paper documents makes sense...filing by type. A census document would
have one number and one copy filed in one place, and could be applied in
Legacy to all the individuals listed in that census record. Legacy provides
a field to enter this File number in both Source and Detail windows. Even if
the RINs and MRINs change, the document numbers would not be affected.
