So do you just assign your own equivalent to RIN's and MRIN's? If so, do you store it in Legacy, and if so, where? I guess in the User ID field.

I received family files from relatives and put them in a new file, then manually merged what I wanted from their's and mine . Legacy would pick up the RIN and MRIN from the relative's file. Where my numbers would be in the 400's, their's were in the 3,000, 6,000 and 20,000+ numbers. I was fairly new to Legacy,so perhaps I didn't know how to work the program properly, but it seemed like no matter what I did, what I checked off or didn't check, Legacy would pick up these numbers. Unlinking and deleting could also be a problem. I finally suceeded in sorting the numbers easily. Now if I delete or unlink I automatically check the RIN and ID numbers. I don't use the RIN or MRIN numbers for filing. I have my own system that works for me, so I don't worry what number my 32nd great grandfather has, I just want to keep the numbers in order as I had so many people to add and many different numbers were confusing, especially when they would jump from 350 to 19,345.

Hi Susan I use the Fileyourpapers method but to save grief if something goes wrong as I enter a person into my data base I put their MRIN in the User ID field this means if the worst hapened and the MRIN's changed I would still have the use ID's
