Ann, Since St. is an abbreviation of Saint, it's not a matter of one being correct and the other being wrong, but more a matter of style.
The United States Geological Survey uses the fully spelled out names, so perhaps it is common practice in that field to do so. In addition to the St./Saint issue, there is also Mt./Mount and Ft./Fort, all of which they fully spell out.
