Where is the city of Devon? The "County Town" of Devonshire is Exeter. I live in Berkshire - thankfully we don't have a city of similar name!!!

It only applies to counties which have a city bearing the same name, though. As in the example you quoted, it is as you said, Northamptonshire, as the county "seat" is Northampton. Whether or not current usage in the UK is tending to drop the "shire", I do not know. Perhaps one of our English members may be able to enlighten us in that regard?
