Sorry. I 'created' the term in reference to the Welsh and Scots counties, which
have
a lot of consolidation going on, for simplicity in putting my point accross. In
the
states, (only) some of the current atlases reflect the changes, others printed
in the 2000's still show the old boundaries. We here in the states understand
changing boundaries, but like to know when (and why) a boundary is changed
and how does it affect Vital Record creating and storing. The term supercounties
is used in USA, loosely. I just borrowed it. e.g. when two counties become
one,
do the records get shuffled together, maintained separate and end on the join
date,
or, since all records go to St. Catherine's House, do I need to worry about
more
than the town's name?

Subject: [LegacyUG] Super Counties?

As a lifelong resident of England, and involved in politics for a lot of
them, could someone tell me what on earth a Supercounty is?
OK the County boundaries were all shunted around in 1973 and then tinkered
with again in 1990s so the PM could reinstate Rutland and, to some extent
bring back the Yorkshire Ridings. But whatb else have I missed?

Thank you for your analysis of the supercounty situation. A new atlas I had
purchased
had them instead of the counties, and here in the states we don't always get
news bites
on this type of stuff. I also have both Channel Islands and Isle of Man,
which makes even
more confusion. I will ignore the SC for now.

Well, Rich,

I've not bothered with the new supercounties, because they are sufficiently
new to have little historical significance. Let's wait a few years to see if
they stick. The politicians are always playing silly b's with these things.
