Hi Legacy Users,
I see that Kevin the developer of Pocket Genealogist has already answered this but I'd like to also say a couple things about the Pocket Genealogist. Kevin has worked very hard on Pocket Genealogist and it is a great program. He is great programmer and has done an excellent job with the data synchronization between Pocket Genealogist and Legacy. In fact through all of his testing and work with making sure data is never lost he has helped me solve some important data issues with Legacy. He knows Legacy inside and out and has designed the Pocket Genealogist to take full advantage of your Legacy data. The Pocket Genealogist was built for Legacy. I'd have to say that you can feel 100% confident in the job Kevin has done. I have never seen anyone so devoted to his users and to his product and to making sure your data is safe in every way. We don't know of anyone who has ever lost information or has had any problems with anything.
For those who have never tried the Pocket Genealogist it's a great tool. It will read your Legacy family file information into your Windows CE device. On your device you have full editing capabilities and the program is awesome. When you get home you can then transfer all changes you have made on your handheld device right back into your Legacy file. This gives you real power to be able to make your Legacy data portable where you can take it anywhere you go. Being able to edit your file where ever you are helps keep things up to date and accurate. No more do you have to try to remember things and then try to enter things when you get home. All of the Pocket Genealogist users that I have talked to simply love the program and I think all of them love what Kevin has done with it. He listens to his users and has given them so much power in such a nice program.
Richard quoted one of our support people as saying data on a hand held device should be considered as Read/only. This used to be true but since the release of the full syncronized version of Pocket Genealogist many, many of our users have had no problems at all using full power of the Pocket Genealogist with it's exciting editing capabilities and it's two-way data syncronization between Legacy and your Windows CE device.
Thanks

Richard,
I think they must be thinking of GEDCOM transfers... The "Advanced" version of Pocket Genealogist transfers data directly in both directions. (with V5 of Legacy). As long as you only change data in one place at a time (Legacy or Pocket Genealogist) you have access to all data for changes except for photos. Once you synchronize the changes, you can then change either side but you must then synchronize again before changing the other side.
It took years to get Pocket Genealogist to this point and no other device program comes close. I'll have too speak to support as they must not be aware of it's capabilities.

Hello,
I am seeking comments about whether data entered into a pocket PC Pocket Genealogist can be accurately and fully downloaded to a Legacy on a laptop, and vice versa (please mention which versions of Legacy and Pocket Genealogist were used). I use a HP/IPAQ pda, which is a pocket PC. I would like to buy software that uses Legacy and will run on my IPAQ. I hope to input and output data while on a trip. A member of the Legacy support staff told me, concerning Pocket Genealogist, that:
"I've spoken with several people who use this program. They love it
but have found that it's much better to consider a genealogy program on a
PDA as a "read-only" and not try editing the data and exporting it back into
your main Family File. There's a risk of losing data with any import/export
process.
You might ask on the Legacy User Group mailing list for users of Pocket Genealogist what their experience has been with editing the program and converting the data back to a Legacy file."
I will be traveling overseas, where my previous generations reside. I want
to be able to enter the data into the pda, and to have it be retrievable
correctly into the Legacy running on my home computer. Before I invest the
time in using Pocket Genealogist, I would like to know that its input/output
processing with Legacy is fully functional.
Thank you for your time, I look forward to hearing from you.
