Hi Susan,
I think you probably have to do it individually.
The quickest way to do it manually would be to get a show list of those using this surname, tag the list and then use the name list with just that tag showing to edit each one.
You appear to be able to manually replace it with nothing.
I think this would be much quicker than creating an AKA and then swapping AKA and Name as I don't think the IGI search works on AKAs.
I wouldn't think the work was worth it for an IGI search for someone without a surname - however it would give cleaner reports - though you could get cleaner reports by replacing the single bracket with double and in report options choose not to print private notes.
Cheers, Cathy

A while back, I mentioned I had trouble searching the IGI using Legacy, where my individuals have the Surname of [---?---] instead of being blank. I was advised to delete the [---?---] from the name fields.
I just went to try to change it, and I cannot delete the "[---?---]" from the Master List, nor can I edit or search and replace it with a blank or a single space.
Do I have to change each person individually? Is there a quicker way? If I have a person who is a placeholder, since I know her married surnames, for example, but not first or maiden name, I cannot delete the Surname. Legacy thinks I'm deleting the person, even if they have vital data and linked family.
I do have one idea that might work. Should I simply create an AKA for each person with a [---?---] Surname and make it blank? Is there a way to do this quickly? (I've only been using Legacy for a few months, and I'm still learning.)
Thank you, Susan Daily
