Not true.  Go to Tools -> Set Relationships.  Choose yourself and click Set 
Relationships.  Your wifes brother will show as your brother-in-law.

Not required.  With the mother selected (Family View), simply click
in the child area and select Add a new Son. On the individual screen for the
mother, click "Never married"

An "UNKNOWN" will show up (in the family view), but for display only.
