Ruth Ann, I'd agree that having a large number of [first name] Unknown [last name] Unknown makes for a messy report. In instances where the wife is unknown and the husband is known, I record the wife as "Mary Mrs John Jones" Unknown where the part in quotes is the first name. I don't, however, actually use the quotes in the first name. This works well even if the actual first name is not known.
But, not having the either the first or last name of a husband becomes a bit more difficult.
