Coolscan V - the only one than costs $600. It has Coolscan IV software. Cheaper brands still using Coolscan III

What Nikon model number are you talking about?

Thanks

8 of us bought a Nikon slide scanner (the best!) and
are passing it around
to convert slides to files for further use. It
retails for $600, but we got
it through Amazon for $610 with no tax. When do will
sell on e-bay where the
Nikon rings about 75% of purchase. Look there for a
used one

The Nikon has a little learning curve, but can bring
back aged, scratched
slides like a miracle. Also can crop and expand to
8"x10" easily as it
allows up to 4,000 pixel resolution. Only 630 need
for a straight ink jet
print. I am scanning most at 2,400 to allow for
cropping.

I save as a tiff (tif) file as this format saves ALL
color information.
[2,400 pixel/in takes about 25 MB per slide so an
external hard drive from
OfficeMax is a good deal at $120 per 120 GB
storage). Later in Photoshop or
FastFoto I can make touch up color, size and save as
a jpg (only need 96 dpi
(pixel) for computer monitor. This allows quick
e-mail. By saving the same
slide as above, you can even do a 11"x14". You can
always pitch pixel
resolution, but not increase it - so decide what you
want to do before
picking your scan resolution. One of the group has
11,000 slides. So
presorting before scanning is a necessity.

Remember - get the best scanner - Nikon is the best.

A friend is a doctor and when he heard what we were
doing he said he had a
scanner at his practice that is never really used.
Check your physician or
business friends and for a bottle of wine they may
loan it to you.
