You can certainly do this with View > Split Screen without opening a new file as Jack says.
You can also do it by going to Manual Merge when focussed on one of them and choosing the other for the Right Side person.
Then you're in the right place to combine them if you decide they are the same person.
The merge allows you to keep all the bits of information from both entries. You can choose to add differing birth etc info as an Alt. Birth.
Events and Notes can be copied or appended to the other as appropriate.
